Pourtant, <strong>elles \u00e9mettraient entre 45% et 65% des \u00e9missions totales de m\u00e9thane de l\u2019Australie provenant des mines de charbon<\/strong> (55%+\/-10%).<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u202f<em>C\u2019est difficile \u00e0 croire<\/em>\u202f\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 la <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2106.10457\">professeure Ilse Aben qui dirige l\u2019\u00e9quipe de chercheurs<\/a>. L\u2019\u00e9quipe a utilis\u00e9 les <strong>images d\u2019un capteur atmosph\u00e9rique d\u2019un satellite pendant 2 ans<\/strong> sur les mines de charbon du Queensland pour quantifier leurs \u00e9missions de m\u00e9thane.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019\u00c9tat du Queensland est le plus grand producteur de charbon d\u2019Australie. L\u2019Australie est le cinqui\u00e8me plus grand producteur de charbon au&nbsp;monde.<\/p>\n<p>Lors de la COP26 \u00e0 Glasgow, plus d\u2019une centaine de pays ont sign\u00e9 l\u2019engagement visant \u00e0 r\u00e9duire de 30% les \u00e9missions de m\u00e9thane du niveau de 2020 d\u2019ici \u00e0 2030. <strong>L\u2019Australie n\u2019a pas sign\u00e9 cet engagement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>La mine de charbon de Hail Creek produirait 1\u202f% du charbon australien et \u00e9mettrait 20% du m\u00e9thane des&nbsp;mines<\/h2>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Le m\u00e9thane est un puissant gaz \u00e0 effet de serre, bien plus puissant que le dioxyde de carbone. Coinc\u00e9s dans les veines de charbon, le m\u00e9thane et d\u2019autres gaz sont lib\u00e9r\u00e9s lors de l\u2019extraction du charbon.<\/p>\n<p>Outre le m\u00e9thane et le carbone, l\u2019extraction du charbon peut \u00e9galement \u00e9mettre du dioxyde de soufre, un polluant atmosph\u00e9rique \u00e0 l\u2019origine des pluies acides. L\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsendip.com\/fr\/eskom-lentreprise-delectricite-sud-africaine-qui-emet-plus-de-dioxyde-de-soufre-que-nimporte-quel-autre-acteur-du-secteur\/\">Afrique du Sud est l\u2019un des plus grands \u00e9metteurs de dioxyde de soufre<\/a> au monde \u00e0 cause d\u2019une seule mine de charbon.<\/p>\n<p>Et l\u2019une des mines de charbon du Queensland est particuli\u00e8rement mise en cause&nbsp;: la mine \u00e0 ciel ouvert de Hail Creek. <strong>Cette mine \u00e9met \u00e0 elle seule 40% des \u00e9missions de m\u00e9thane enregistr\u00e9es par l\u2019\u00e9quipe n\u00e9erlandaise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Cette mine est exploit\u00e9e par <strong>Glencore<\/strong>, un entreprise de 150 000 employ\u00e9s op\u00e9rant dans les mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res et l\u2019extraction de ressources naturelles. En 2020, Glencore a g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 11,6 milliards de dollars (am\u00e9ricains) de b\u00e9n\u00e9fices.<\/p>\n<p>La mine de Hail Creek ne repr\u00e9sente que 1% de la production australienne de charbon. Mais les r\u00e9sultats indiquent qu\u2019elle repr\u00e9sente <strong>20% des \u00e9missions nationales de m\u00e9thane provenant de l\u2019exploitation du charbon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Et les \u00e9missions seraient bien plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es que ce qui est d\u00e9clar\u00e9 par le gouvernement.
