In Mallorca, Spain, two women, for the first time in Europe, effectively shared the pregnancy of the same child El Mundo reported.

The lesbian couple, Azahara and Estefanía, 27 and 30 years of age, were able to share the gestation process between the both of them.

Eggs, sperm from a donor and culture media were combined in a fertility treatment device and inserted in one of the women, below her cervix.

Unlike in vitro fertilization, the process of fertilization between the egg and sperm is not done entirely in a lab, which allows for “fertilization and incubation to occur in a way similar to natural conception” and “keeps women closely connected to the experience,” according to the American company marketing the INVOcell device used for the pregnancy.

After the incubation period, doctors selected an embryo and placed it inside the partner’s uterus. On Monday, Derek, weighing 3.3 kilograms, was born. This is the first time this kind of birth has been realized in Europe.
