  • The world’s largest black diamond sold for £3.16 million ($4.25m) at auction on February 9. Called ‘Enigma’ the 555.55-carat gem has 55 faces and entered into the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest diamond in 2006. The mysterious jewel may have come from outer space asteroids and was created with a meteoric impact between 2.6 and 3.8 billion years ago.
  • Moldova approved the creation of a commission that will evaluate the integrity of the judiciary system and elect the highest members, magistrates and prosecutors. The objective is to have a fairer justice system.
  • The decriminalization of abortion in Colombia is stalled because of internal disagreement in the Constitutional Court.
  • European scientists made a huge step by producing energy from nuclear fusion for over five seconds.
  • Almost all of the votes cast by Portuguese expats during the country’s latest legislative elections are null. Ballots included many votes without the required voter identification card that goes with it. In total, 157,205 votes were annulled.
  • Spain asked for explanations from the President of Mexico after he said he wanted to “pause relations” with the country for a bit. Spain is Mexico’s second commercial partner after the United States, but Andrés Manuel López Obrador sees them as the former colonizer.
  • For the first time in Egypt, a Christian will hold the presidency of the Supreme Constitutional Court, created more than 50 years ago.
